Accessories for Double Bass
Double bass accessories must accommodate the instrument’s size, scale length and substantial weight. The essentials are a secure cover, stable support while playing, spare strings and dry-cleaning aids. Add a pickup, stand or transport wheel according to how you play and transport the instrument, not as part of a universal setup.
A cover protects the finish, while a hard case also protects against impacts
A soft cover should have reinforcement around the bridge, high-quality zips and handles capable of supporting the full weight. A wheel makes transport on level surfaces easier, but you need suitable handles on stairs. Choose the size according to your specific double bass.
The stand must have a wide base
The instrument must not rest on the bridge or tuning machines. Place the stand away from thoroughfares and check the lock before setting the instrument down. Store the double bass in a stable climate over the long term, not beside a radiator or in sunlight.
Choose strings and rosin according to your technique
An orchestral player needs bow grip, while a jazz player may seek more flexible pizzicato. Double bass rosin is usually softer than violin rosin and becomes sticky more easily in warm conditions. Carry it in a rigid container away from the varnish.
A pickup needs a suitable preamp
A piezo inserted at the bridge may require a high-impedance input. Secure the cable against being pulled out, and ensure the installation does not deform the bridge. An electric double bass may have a built-in pickup, so check its equipment first.
Setup tools are not standard household equipment
You can change a string and clean the instrument yourself, but adjustment of the bridge, soundpost or fingerboard should be carried out by a technician. Use gauges and tools only in the size specified by the manufacturer. An improvised intervention under high tension may damage the instrument.
The endpin support protects both the floor and stability
The rubber tip must fit firmly on the endpin and must not slip. On a smooth stage, use a mat or anchor designed for a double bass; an improvised sharp solution may damage the surface and endanger you if it shifts.
Divide accessories into transport, playing and amplification categories, and check every item against the dimensions and scale length of your double bass.
