Oboes

The oboe uses a double reed, and even a small change in its opening significantly affects resistance, intonation and tone colour. A student instrument should have a reliable mechanism and a system that matches your school; as an advanced player, you also consider additional keys and individually made reeds. Without regular servicing, even a good oboe can be difficult for you to play.

The mechanism must close as a whole

Long key linkages react to small shifts. When testing it, check both octave mechanisms, the low notes and the joints between the sections. Do not use force to deal with cracked wood, leaking pads or bent keys; the instrument needs professional servicing.

A reed is not a universal consumable part

Match the hardness and shape of the reed to your embouchure and level. Briefly soak a new reed in water, then remove it after playing and let it air in a reed case. A reed that is too open tires your lips, while one that is too closed restricts dynamics and can raise the pitch.

Protect the wood from thermal shock

Let a cold oboe warm up gradually. After playing, remove moisture from each section with a suitable swab and do not leave water in the tone holes. You can find accessories in the cleaning and maintenance of wind instruments category.

A related bass voice has different requirements

If you are looking for a lower-pitched double-reed instrument, see bassoons. Their size, fingering and support are different, although the double-reed principle remains related.

Choose the system according to your school, try the instrument with a suitable reed and include regular checks of the mechanism in your budget.
