Bags and Cases for Violins

A cover or case must hold your violin securely and protect it during the type of transport you actually use. A soft cover is sufficient for careful, short journeys, while a rigid shaped or rectangular case withstands impacts better. The first criterion is the exact size of the instrument; with children's violins, a larger case will not remain suitable as they grow.

A shaped case saves weight

It follows the outline of the violin and is usually more compact. A rectangular case offers more space for sheet music, a shoulder rest or an additional bow, but can be noticeably heavier for daily commuting. Polycarbonate, ABS, a wooden shell and a foam core offer different levels of protection; assess the material together with the construction of the fasteners.

The interior must not press on the bridge

Your violin should rest on the designated points and its neck should be secured by a soft holder. Close the empty case without resistance, then try it with the instrument; the lid must not touch the bridge or tailpiece. The space for strings and rosin must be separated from the varnish.

Straps and the handle are part of safety

Backpack straps make travelling to school easier, but they must have strong fittings and must not come undone when lifted. Reflective elements help in traffic, while a water-resistant cover protects against brief rain; however, you should never leave any case standing in water.

Climate inside the case

A hygrometer is only a guide, not a substitute for proper storage. Do not leave the case next to a radiator, in direct sunlight or in a car. Use a humidifier only when conditions require it and ensure that the water does not touch the instrument.

Store bows in their holders without tension

Both the tip and frog must be secured so that they do not come loose when the case is closed. Loosen the bow hair before storing it and check that it does not touch the lid or accessories. Two holders are useful only if the case remains securely closed with both bows inside.

Measure your instrument, place the bow and shoulder rest in the case too, and check that nothing presses on the bridge or varnish.
