Bows for Double Bass

A double bass bow is made for either a German or French grip. You hold a German frog from below and a French frog from above, similarly to a cello bow; you cannot interchange the techniques merely by changing your hand position. Choose the type according to your teacher and the school you are learning.

The weight must be balanced

A heavier bow may support a firm attack, but it will tire your hand if the tip is poorly balanced. Try a long note at both the frog and the tip, as well as short bouncing strokes. The stick should remain straight and retain its camber after tightening.

Assess the material together with its flexibility

Wooden sticks and carbon fibre respond differently to climate and impact. Carbon fibre is practical for travel, but you should try every bow individually. Match the size and length to your double bass; an electric model from the electric double basses category may have a different string response.

Loosen the hair after playing

Apply rosin as needed and wipe any residue from the strings. Thinning or uneven hair requires rehairing, not topping up at home. The screw should turn smoothly without lateral play in the frog.

First confirm whether you use a German or French grip, then compare balance and flexibility on your own instrument.
