MIDI Interfaces

MIDI interfaces are an essential part of connecting musical instruments to a computer or other devices, enabling digital communication and sound control. These interfaces are indispensable for anyone who works with electronic music or wants to take their musical projects to the next level. The number of ports and standalone operation determine how large a setup the interface can connect.

USB MIDI is often used for convenient and efficient connection, offering simple setup and broad compatibility with modern devices. MIDI devices enable precise control and synchronisation of various musical instruments and software applications, which every musician and producer will appreciate.

Choose a MIDI interface according to the number of instruments and data routing

One input and one output are sufficient to connect a keyboard to a computer, while a larger hardware setup requires more independent ports. Each traditional MIDI port carries multiple channels, but separate outputs simplify routing and reduce the need to daisy-chain devices via MIDI Thru.

  • USB host and USB device are not the same function; check which side of the connection the interface supports.
  • Standalone operation without a computer is important if the interface is to function as a router on stage.
  • Check SysEx data, MIDI clock and reliable operation at high tempos when using older synthesisers or firmware updates.

The interface does not transmit sound unless it is a combined audio/MIDI model. To record audio, you therefore need separate audio inputs and the correct cables.
