Stands for Violins

A stand or holder supports your violin during a rehearsal, but it does not replace a case for long-term storage. It must support the instrument at points that do not press on the bridge, tailpiece or varnish. When choosing, consider the stability of the base, soft contact surfaces and safety in a space with people or children.

A floor stand needs a wide base

The legs must not wobble, and the folding mechanism should lock securely. A low, compact model is portable, while a taller one may also hold a bow but is easier to catch on a cable. Before placing your violin on it, check that the stand is fully unfolded.

A wall holder must be anchored to the substrate

The instrument is light, but leverage and accidental pulling create a risk. Use fixings suitable for masonry or a load-bearing part of the wall. Do not place the holder above a radiator, by a window or in the direct airflow from air conditioning.

The contact-surface material must not react with the varnish

Soft foam or rubber wears over time, and some materials may leave a mark. Check the surface regularly and do not leave the instrument on the stand for weeks. Use violin bags and cases for transport.

Store the bow separately and loosen it

If the stand has a bow holder, it must protect both the tip and the hair from touching the floor. Loosen the screw after playing. Do not leave rosin and small parts on the base, where they may fall underfoot.

Check a folding holder before each use

Hinges and locks may loosen during transport. After unfolding it, press down on the base without the instrument and check that the legs do not move. Replace a missing rubber foot with the correct part, not adhesive tape near the varnish.

Visibility also matters on stage

A black stand may blend into the floor in a dark space. Place it away from cables and routes used by musicians. At the end of a piece, do not hurriedly place the instrument on a structure that is not fully open.

Choose a stand according to its stability and a safe location in the room; return your violin to its case overnight and for transport.
