String instrument Pickups

A pickup for a bowed string instrument converts vibrations from the bridge or body into an electrical signal. Piezo elements, contact pickups and microphone solutions respond differently to feedback and tone colour. Compatibility depends on the specific instrument, mounting location and input impedance of the next device.

A bridge-mounted piezo captures vibrations directly

An insert, clip or integrated bridge provides a strong signal and good feedback resistance. Incorrect pressure can, however, alter the acoustic tone or damage the bridge. Entrust permanent modifications to a luthier.

A contact pickup needs a suitable location

Moving it a few centimetres changes the balance between bass and treble. Temporary adhesive or putty must not react with the varnish. Before mounting it on an instrument from the parent category bowed string instruments, check the method permitted by the manufacturer.

Impedance determines the fullness of the sound

A passive piezo needs a high-impedance input or preamp. With a standard line input, it may lose bass and sound harsh. An active pickup requires a battery and provides a more stable output for a long cable.

An electric double bass already has a pickup built into its design

With an electric double bass, first determine what is built in so that you do not add a duplicate system. On stage, check the grounding, cable loop and monitor position in relation to the instrument.

A microphone captures more of the body and the stage

A small instrument microphone can sound more natural than a contact element, but it also picks up monitors, drums and ambient noise. Its mount must not scratch the varnish or restrict bow movement. In a loud band, a piezo is usually more practical.

Testing before the concert is part of the installation

Set the same volume for both pizzicato and bowing, and check for hum and cable movement. If the pickup crackles or cuts out on a loud note, do not address the problem merely by reducing the treble on the mixer.

Choose a pickup for the exact instrument and mounting method, and pair it with amplification that respects its impedance.
