Strings for Double Bass

Choose double bass strings according to scale length, playing style and desired tension. An orchestral set should respond under the bow, while a jazz set may prioritise flexible pizzicato and long sustain. Steel, synthetic and gut options differ in stability and feel under your fingers.

The scale length must match the silk winding

A 3/4 designation is not enough, so measure the vibrating string length of your double bass. The coloured silk and thick section of the string must end in the correct places at the tuning peg and tailpiece. A string of the wrong length may break or fail to wind correctly.

Tension changes the action and load

Higher tension is not automatically louder. It may reduce comfort and require the bridge or soundpost to be adjusted. Consult a luthier about a significant change of type, and change the strings one at a time so that the instrument does not lose tension.

The bow needs a compatible surface

Not every soft pizzicato string responds equally well under a double bass bow. If you alternate between techniques, look for a compromise set and test its response with both quiet bowing and strong pizzicato.

Measure the scale length, identify your main playing style and choose the tension together with the setup of your specific double bass.
