Violas, 1/8

The viola fills the middle register between the violin and cello and, compared with the violin, has a longer body, a darker tone colour and a C string. There is no single standard size indicated by a fraction; models are often specified by body length in inches or centimetres. You therefore need to find a balance between fullness of sound, the reach of your left hand and strain on your shoulder.

The size must not strain your hand

A larger viola may offer a more powerful low end, but a longer scale length increases the spacing between your fingers. When trying one, watch for a relaxed shoulder, your reach in first position and whether the instrument feels unbalanced. Consult your teacher when switching from the violin so that the larger dimensions do not force your elbow and wrist into an unnatural position.

A set for your first playing experience

Check the bridge, pegs, string height and chinrest. The bow should match the viola in weight; a violin bow may not produce the necessary grip on the C string. When comparing bows, consider the straightness and balance of the stick, not just its material.

Tone results from the setup as a whole

Thicker strings require a steadier stroke and the correct contact point. If the viola responds slowly or the C string sounds muffled, the quality of the instrument may not be the cause; you need to check the strings, bridge, soundpost and technique. Leave adjustments to the bridge and soundpost to a luthier.

The viola part places different demands on reading

The alto clef is fundamental for the viola, and the treble clef may be added in higher positions. If you are switching from the violin, expect both a new way of reading and greater distances between your fingers. Choose an instrument that does not make you struggle with excessive weight at the same time as this change.

Compare two adjacent sizes in playing position and have the setup checked before you begin practising regularly.
