Sheet music for band and orchestra

Sheet music for bands and orchestras is intended for ensemble playing with multiple instruments and may include a full score, individual parts or both. When choosing, the exact instrumentation, ensemble level and number of parts are important. Also check which materials are included in the edition so that the conductor's score or a required part is not missing at rehearsal.

The score and parts must match the ensemble

A chamber group, school orchestra and larger ensemble each require a different set of parts. Check the instruments, the tunings of transposing parts, the number of players and any alternative instrumentation stated by the publisher. The difficulty should suit the weakest section of the ensemble, not just the soloist.

Practical criteria

  • ensemble type and complete list of instruments,
  • score, separate parts and their number,
  • arrangement level and length of the piece,
  • language of the instructions and specific edition.

You can find more publications for individual instruments in the sheet music and tablature category. Before ordering, compare the contents of the edition with the actual instrumentation of your ensemble.

For a school or amateur ensemble, it is also worth checking the readability of the parts and options for doubling voices. Do not use a substitute part for a missing instrument unless the arrangement explicitly allows it. An edition with clear reference points and identical bar numbering in every part will help the conductor. Distribute all the parts before the first rehearsal and check that every player has received the correct one.
