Violin shoulder rests

A shoulder rest should fill the space between your violin and body without raising your left shoulder or forcing your head to one side. The size of the instrument, the length of your neck, the shape of your shoulder and the position of the chin rest are all important. A universal model may not suit everyone; you need to adjust the rest together with your entire playing posture.

Width and height must have some adjustment range

The feet adjust to the width of the ribs and must not slip off the edge. Set the height so that your head remains upright, not so that the rest pushes the violin towards your chin. For children's violins, check the 1/2 or 3/4 designation or the range permitted by the manufacturer.

The shape of the base changes the contact point

A flexible rest follows your shoulder differently from a rigid wooden or composite body. A wider surface can distribute pressure, but also restrict movement. Adjust the angle in small increments and play a longer passage, not just a few notes while standing.

The attachment must protect the varnish

The rubber feet should be clean, free of cracks and fitted to the edge without metal contact. Remove the rest before putting your violin in its case if there is no dedicated space for it. You can find other compatible accessories among violin accessories.

Do not address pain merely by increasing the height

Tension can be caused by the chin rest, an oversized violin or your playing technique. If your arm becomes numb or your shoulder hurts, consult a teacher or a physiotherapist experienced in working with musicians about the adjustment. A rest helps, but does not replace a healthy posture.

The rest can also be adjusted lengthwise

Moving it towards your chest or shoulder changes the angle of the violin and the reach of your left hand. Make adjustments without holding the instrument and play a scale and position shifts after every change. If the rest falls off as you move, check the width and feet first instead of gripping more tightly.

Try the height, width and angle during a longer playing session; you will recognise the correct adjustment by your relaxed shoulder, not by the appearance of the rest.
